![]() We get numerous reports of things simply not working as they should in those builds, presumably because of hacks made or compile tools used. That knowledge has come handy to help out friends at manually configuring controllers on their PCs and emulators as well, so there's a plus on having some experience with controller mapping dialogs :) In any case, since I've been used to standalone emulators for years, and I find them easier to configure each on their own, I've stuck to that. Upscaling Flycast's resolution has weird artifacts in RA compared to simply switching that option in standalone, for an example. RA's idea sounds nice, but configuring it is still a convoluted process, and even then some emulators will simply have odd compatibility issues with your PC or the frontend. Would like using a launcher if it wasn't for my weird controller configuration variety though, but chances are that I wouldn't have the time to really stick to using that nowadays. One big plus is that certain emulator specific settings or features are easily configurable and available in standalone (most notably setting up multiplayer on portable consoles and arcade machines). Standalone emulators, if only because all I have are DInput controllers with different button mappings (since they are all different generic models) so even if it is a bit of a mess every now and then. For now, I'll definitely keep RA on the HTPC as it's easy to have just one interface for the family. You guys have definitely convinced me to check out standalone emulators, especially if the Retroarch core doesn't work for me - depending on the relationship between RA devs and Emu devs, there may be a significant distance in the fork's features. ![]() All Standalone and often some variation of "screw Retroarch".Retroarch (or other libretro frontends) for older consoles and standalone for newer consoles. There were some outliers, but it seems answers could be organized from highest to lowest as: I've learned neat things like the existence of Ares and also about some of the other standalones. ![]() Probably lots of others I can't think of at the moment.Įdit: After 3 days of comments (currently 302 comments), I want to thank everyone who has already participated. convenience of setting up controllers once vs greater flexibility in setting up the controller. If it's in an arcade cabinet or raspberry pi for the family, then maybe Retroarch is preferred for its simplicity as a launcher So I was curious what most of the community was doing at this point in time? At the same time, Retroarch cores have increased in number and quality. We seem to have an explosion of standalone emulators, even in realms where there had long been one accepted choice (Duckstation appearing over the last few years, for example).
